Police authorities have provided an important update following an apparent kidnapping incident captured by a doorbell camera outside a woman’s residence. The woman was observed being forcefully taken by a man outside her home in Wichita, Kansas, around 2 am on Sunday. A 22-year-old man has been apprehended in connection with the occurrence, which authorities have linked to suspected domestic violence.
Video footage from the doorbell depicted the woman, aged 35, screaming as she was seized from behind while dressed in a black top and shorts. Subsequently, she was pulled out of view from the camera’s coverage area. The Wichita Police Department (WPD) confirmed on Tuesday that the woman has been safely located.
Authorities stated that, based on their investigation progress, they believe the incident involves a domestic violence situation between the woman and her boyfriend, emphasizing that the woman did not sustain significant injuries. The police assured the public that there is no apparent ongoing threat to public safety. A spokesperson for the police force announced the arrest of the suspect involved in the case.
The 22-year-old male was taken into custody by officers from the Domestic Intervention and Violence Reduction team (DIVRT) at approximately 7 pm in connection with the doorbell surveillance incident. He has been charged with aggravated battery strangulation, two counts of domestic simple battery, and criminal restraint, and is now detained at Sedgwick County Jail awaiting formal charges by the Sedgwick County District Attorney.
Prior to the woman’s rescue and the suspect’s arrest, the police had offered a $2,000 (£1,496) reward for information. The WPD expressed gratitude to the public for sharing the video and images, which contributed to raising awareness about the incident and ultimately led the woman to contact them.
The incident has raised concerns among neighbors, prompting discussions about past occurrences. Resident Angelica Verduzco expressed her worries, stating, “It’s dangerous. That’s the truth. But, always, I believe there have always been kidnappings.”
