A woman in Texas, Lydia West, aged 72, sustained severe injuries, including a fractured pelvis, following an assault by a group of enraged geese while she was feeding ducks at a local park on December 1. The incident began with a large goose knocking her to the ground, followed by other geese joining in the attack.
Lydia was left incapacitated on the ground until a passing couple intervened to repel the geese. She was then hospitalized and diagnosed with multiple pelvic fractures and internal bleeding. Her son, David, mentioned that she will undergo extensive physical therapy and rehabilitation to regain her ability to walk.
David expressed disbelief at the territorial behavior of the geese, emphasizing the need for caution when interacting with wildlife, especially for older individuals. City Lake Park officials are contemplating installing signs to educate visitors on how to coexist with wildlife better.
Experts advise giving geese space, especially during nesting season, to prevent aggressive encounters. If faced with an aggressive goose, individuals should confront it directly, make themselves appear larger, and retreat slowly without turning their back. The incident serves as a reminder to the public, particularly seniors, to exercise caution around wildlife.
