“Key Financial Events in December Impacting Your Wallet”

Published:

In December, aside from the usual holiday expenses associated with Christmas, there are significant financial events on the horizon that may impact your finances.

Firstly, some households can expect to receive a Christmas bonus payment, typically amounting to £10, from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). This tax-free bonus, historically distributed in the initial week of December, does not affect existing benefit claims and is anticipated to reach recipients by January 1.

Furthermore, ongoing winter assistance programs like Cold Weather Payments and the Warm Home Discount will persist throughout December, providing aid to eligible individuals facing cold weather and energy cost challenges.

On December 17, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) will release the latest inflation figures, reflecting a current rate of 3.6%, with past peaks reaching 11.1% in October 2022. Following this, the Bank of England is set to announce its interest rate decision on December 18, with the current base rate standing at 4%, having undergone five reductions since August 2024.

Due to the Christmas and New Year bank holidays falling on Thursdays and Fridays, benefit payments scheduled for these dates will likely be disbursed on the preceding Wednesdays to ensure timely receipt by beneficiaries. Additionally, self-assessment taxpayers looking to offset owed taxes through their PAYE tax code must submit their online returns by December 30, with the option available for tax bills under £3,000 for individuals already paying tax through PAYE.

Throughout December, various support schemes will remain active, including Cold Weather Payments, Winter Fuel Payments of up to £300, and the Warm Home Discount offering a £150 reduction on electricity bills.
