Published:

In a disturbing incident on the French holiday island of Saint Pierre d´Oléron, a 35-year-old man was arrested by the police after allegedly crashing his car into a group of pedestrians and cyclists. The man, who reportedly attempted to set his vehicle on fire, shouted “Allahu Akbar” upon his arrest. The attack left at least 10 people injured, with two individuals in critical condition.

The suspect was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement, who had to use a Taser to subdue him as he resisted arrest. Authorities found him trying to set fire to his car shortly after the violent episode. The man, a resident of a village close to the site of the attack, was known to local officials for his history of infractions, particularly related to substance abuse.

Following the incident, an attempted murder investigation was initiated by the police. The Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, provided initial details, confirming that several pedestrians and cyclists were struck during the rampage. Although the suspect was taken into custody, the case is not being treated as a terrorist act according to Arnaud Laraize, the public prosecutor in La Rochelle.

Despite reports of the suspect’s drug and alcohol use, along with alleged psychiatric issues, authorities have not classified the case as terrorism-related. Witnesses at the scene claimed to have heard the man shout “Allahu Akbar,” but Laraize emphasized that it is not being probed as a terror incident.

Residents in the area recounted the chaos caused by the car striking pedestrians, emphasizing the shocking nature of the attack. Ile d’Oléron, a popular destination for UK holidaymakers, is the second largest island in France, attracting visitors with its scenic charm and vibrant atmosphere.
