A routine flight from a popular holiday destination turned tragic when a plane carrying 224 passengers, including families, met a fatal end shortly after takeoff. The cause of the crash remained unknown until an aviation expert uncovered a potential explanation a decade later.
On October 31, 2015, Metrojet Flight 9268 departed Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh airport bound for Russia. Just 23 minutes into the flight and at an altitude of 31,000 feet, the Airbus A321 suddenly exploded mid-air, leading to a catastrophic chain of events that resulted in the plane disintegrating over the Sinai desert.
The victims, comprising 25 children, seven crew members, 212 Russians, four Ukrainians, and one Belarusian, all perished in the crash. Most passengers succumbed to severe barotrauma caused by rapid changes in air pressure, rendering them unidentifiable to distraught family members tasked with the somber duty of identification.
Initial speculations surrounding the crash pointed towards terrorism as the likely cause, with concerns raised over the possibility of a bomb being smuggled onto the plane. While some reports suggested technical issues, others hinted at a deliberate act of sabotage.
Although ISIS claimed responsibility for the incident, official declarations did not confirm it as a targeted attack. Even today, the exact cause of the crash remains shrouded in mystery, with veteran aviation expert Julian Bray positing that a terrorist group might have orchestrated the tragedy using an explosive device concealed in luggage loaded onto the aircraft.
According to Bray, the catastrophic event bore the hallmarks of a terror attack, pointing to an internal explosion that severed the tail section of the plane. He theorized that the perpetrators utilized TNT hidden within a piece of luggage, capable of causing extensive damage to critical systems onboard.
The expert further elaborated on the potential methods employed by the terrorists to trigger the explosive device, suggesting the use of a mobile phone or a timing mechanism. As investigations continue, Bray’s insights shed new light on the tragic incident that claimed the lives of all those aboard the ill-fated Metrojet Flight 9268.
