Karabo Mokoena, a young South African woman, was tragically murdered in 2017, sparking national outrage and shedding light on the prevalent issue of gender-based violence in the country. Hailing from Johannesburg, Karabo was remembered by those close to her for her vibrant personality, spiritual nature, and determination.
Her relationship with Sandile Mantsoe, a seemingly successful and caring businessman, was revealed to be tumultuous and emotionally abusive behind the scenes. Concern arose when Karabo went missing on April 27, 2017, prompting her family to report her disappearance as she ceased communication. The social media plea under #FindKarabo ensued as friends desperately sought any information.
Tragically, two days later, Karabo’s body was discovered in a shallow grave in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg, revealing signs of brutal violence and an attempt to conceal the crime through acid and fire. Mantsoe, her boyfriend, was identified as the perpetrator, having allegedly killed her in his Sandton apartment during a heated argument. Evidence unveiled during the trial suggested a pattern of assault leading to her death, with Mantsoe enlisting help to dispose of her remains.
Despite Mantsoe’s claims that Karabo had taken her own life and his subsequent panicked actions, the court dismissed his defense. Forensic evidence, including bloodstains in his apartment and CCTV footage placing him at the crime scene, contradicted his account. Witnesses testified to the emotional and physical abuse Karabo endured throughout their relationship, with friends recounting visible bruises and her desire to leave the abusive situation.
In May 2018, Mantsoe was found guilty of murder, assault causing grievous bodily harm, and obstructing justice. He received a 32-year prison sentence, including separate terms for each charge, with some periods running concurrently. Despite the verdict, Mantsoe displayed a nonchalant demeanor, smiling and interacting with family members and media during court proceedings.
Outside the South Gauteng High Court, activists and mourners rallied, demanding justice for Karabo and all victims of femicide, highlighting the pervasive issue of gender-based violence in South Africa. The movement, initially sparked by a social media campaign under #JusticeForKarabo, evolved into a nationwide call for action, prompting debates, vigils, and renewed advocacy for legislative reforms.
