A 46-year-old former teacher from Southampton has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for sexually abusing three pupils at a Catholic school in Hampshire. Leo Norman, an English and media teacher at St Anne’s School, targeted the teenage girls over a five-year span from 2014 to 2019. Norman pleaded guilty to three charges of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust.
In addition to the jail term, Norman was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and required to register as a sex offender for a decade. He was admonished for exploiting his authority position and betraying the trust placed in him.
The court heard that Norman manipulated the victims by showing them extra attention, giving compliments, and engaging in inappropriate physical contact. His actions left the girls feeling confused and uncomfortable. Melissa Garner, a prosecutor, highlighted Norman’s pattern of predatory behavior and commended the victims for their bravery in coming forward.
Detective Constable Laura Hardie of Hampshire Constabulary described the case as shocking, emphasizing Norman’s abuse of authority over the teenage girls. The victims’ courage in speaking out was crucial in bringing Norman to justice.
During the trial, the victims testified about Norman’s inappropriate behavior, which included writing poems for them, making them sit on his lap, and making suggestive comments. One victim expressed feeling manipulated and blamed for Norman’s advances.
The sentencing reflects the serious nature of the offenses committed by Norman, who breached the trust placed in him as a teacher. The victims’ bravery in reporting the abuse has led to his conviction and serves to protect others from similar exploitation.
