A man with two children tragically lost his life during a holiday in the Canary Islands after a wooden bannister rail gave way, causing him and another individual to fall approximately 20 feet into an apartment stairwell, a recent inquest revealed.
The victim, Darren Silcox, 56, a well-regarded shopkeeper from Cwmbran, Gwent, had traveled to the Costa Teguise resort in Lanzarote for a relaxing vacation. While standing on the balcony of the stairwell with another British holidaymaker, the protective railing suddenly collapsed.
Mr. Silcox succumbed to his injuries, while the other man, aged 54, sustained severe injuries and received medical treatment at a local hospital. The incident occurred at the Galeon Playa Apartments in the Costa Teguise resort.
During the inquest into his death, it was disclosed that Mr. Silcox fell into the atrium stairwell as a result of the wooden bannister collapse. The local civil guard is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
The area coroner for Gwent, Rose Farmer, stated that the opening of the inquest was prompted by the fatal fall. Initial findings indicated that Mr. Silcox’s demise was attributed to a traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, and skull lacerations sustained from the fall. Local residents expressed shock and sorrow over the loss, as Mr. Silcox was known for his hard work and dedication.
Reports revealed that Mr. Silcox’s wife had passed away the previous year, leaving their two children orphaned. The Spanish Civil Guard launched an inquiry to determine if inadequate maintenance or safety measures contributed to the incident, which occurred in the early hours of October 25.
Emergency services responded to the scene promptly after the two men fell at around 1:30 am. Despite efforts to save him, Mr. Silcox was pronounced dead at 3:30 am. The surviving 54-year-old received immediate medical attention and was transferred to the intensive care unit at Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital.
The incident has raised concerns in the popular tourist destination, where visitors expect high safety standards in accommodations. While the compromised railing was situated in an upper area of the hotel, the establishment’s name has not been disclosed by authorities.
The inquest proceedings have been adjourned until a full hearing scheduled for July 20, 2026.
