A tragic incident occurred at the Disneyland Resort in California when a woman lost her life on the popular Matterhorn Bobsled ride in 1984. The victim, Dolly Regene Young, aged 47, was decapitated after being ejected from the ride and hit by another cart.
The incident took place in the late afternoon, around 3:30 pm, when Young’s unfastened seatbelt resulted in her sudden expulsion. Due to her position at the back of the cart, her friends did not immediately notice her absence, making it challenging for them to realize she had been ejected forcibly.
Investigators are still uncertain whether the seatbelt was intentionally undone or if there was a malfunction. Such fatal accidents are exceptionally rare in the park’s long history, with this type of tragic death not occurring for many years.
The ride was stopped within 30 seconds of the accident to prevent further harm and provide immediate aid to Young. Disneyland spokesperson Bob Roth mentioned that Young’s friends only realized she had fallen out after the ride concluded, and fortunately, no one in the other cart that struck her was harmed.
The Matterhorn ride was closed immediately following the incident but reopened the next day. The ride accommodated eight passengers secured in place as they traveled through twists and turns around a snow-covered mountain.
The cart that struck Young was traveling at approximately 20 mph, causing her immediate death. Sadly, this was not the first fatality on this ride, as a 15-year-old boy lost his life in a similar incident in 1964.
The circumstances leading to the tragedies remain unclear, with the victims seemingly falling out of the ride due to unknown reasons. These incidents have raised concerns about the safety measures in place at the park’s attractions.
