In a tragic incident, a mother, Claire Button, was found guilty of murdering her five-year-old son, Lincoln, at their home in South Ockendon, Essex, on December 15, 2024. Following the murder, Claire attempted to take her own life. She has been sentenced to a minimum of nine years in prison.
During the trial at Basildon Crown Court, Claire shared that she struggled with her son’s behavioral issues and mentioned hearing distressing voices in her head, suggesting they did not belong in this world. Lincoln, who had autism, ADHD, and developmental delay, was described as non-verbal.
On the morning of the tragic incident, Claire recounted that Lincoln had a difficult time after a visit to a store, which led her to have suicidal thoughts. She recalled hearing a compelling voice in her head, and despite calling emergency services, faced a lengthy wait for help.
Despite her efforts to seek assistance, Claire ultimately smothered Lincoln later that day. His father, Nicky Button, discovered the heartbreaking scene upon returning home from work. A note left by Claire near Lincoln’s body indicated her belief that her son did not belong in the world, and she felt the same.
Prosecutor Andrew Jackson asserted that Claire’s actions were intentional and aimed at ending Lincoln’s life. Another note found near Lincoln’s body suggested a “do not resuscitate” directive, indicating the immense challenges Claire faced in caring for her son.
During the court proceedings, Nicky Button described Claire as a devoted mother who had been diagnosed with depression months before the incident. He mentioned the struggles they faced in caring for their son, who had significant needs.
Witnesses attested to Lincoln’s joyful nature and his love for trains and toys. Despite the tragic outcome, family members expressed deep sympathy for the emotional turmoil Claire must have endured leading up to the fatal event.
