The reason behind the death of a mother who passed away shortly after delivering her baby at home has been disclosed. Jennifer Cahill, aged 34, died one day after giving birth at her residence in Prestwich, where her newborn daughter, Agnes, also tragically lost her life. The investigation into their deaths in June 2024 proceeded at Rochdale Coroners’ Court last Friday.
During a virtual court session, pathologist Lisa Barker presented the results of the post-mortem examination on Jennifer. Dr. Barker, with 20 years of experience in pathology, mentioned encountering several maternal deaths. The examination revealed fluid accumulation in Jennifer’s chest, lungs, and kidneys, indicative of multi-organ failure. Additionally, a three-centimeter tear was found in Jennifer’s vaginal area. The suggested cause of death was deemed to be multi-organ failure resulting from cardiac arrest due to postpartum hemorrhage.
Furthermore, evidence related to Jennifer’s participation in a Facebook group dedicated to home births was discussed. A statement from detective inspector Julie Adams of Bury police station was read by coroner Joanne Kearsley, detailing the group’s activities and interactions. The ‘Home Birth Support Group UK’ was described as a comprehensive and supportive online resource for home births and birthing processes.
The court was informed that Jennifer had engaged in the group discussions on December 8, 2023, seeking advice on her pregnancy. The group’s description emphasized that no medical advice was provided. Testimonies from North West Ambulance Service personnel who responded to the emergency at the Cahill’s residence were also heard in court. Senior paramedic Sean Scroop, paramedic Adrian George, and emergency medical technician Leah Brennan recounted their actions and observations during the critical incident.
Mr. Scroop detailed the efforts to resuscitate baby Agnes and Jennifer’s condition upon his arrival at the scene. He highlighted the challenges faced and the decisions made to transport Agnes to the hospital. Paramedic George shared insights into Jennifer’s deteriorating health and the measures taken to address her postpartum hemorrhage. The court was informed about the medical interventions performed and the circumstances leading to Jennifer’s critical condition.
The inquest proceedings will continue next week.
