Published:

Naomi Osaka has pulled out of the Australian Open just before her third-round match. The 16th seed was set to face Maddison Inglis on Rod Laver Arena, but Inglis will now progress to the next round.

In a social media post on Instagram, Osaka explained her withdrawal, citing the need to address a physical issue that arose after her previous match. She expressed disappointment at having to end her run at the tournament but emphasized the importance of prioritizing her health to prevent further harm.

Speaking to the press through Tennis Australia, Osaka revealed that the current injury had previously occurred and worsened during warm-up, leading to her decision to withdraw. She acknowledged the need for caution, especially considering the changes her body has undergone post-pregnancy.

This marks Osaka’s second consecutive withdrawal from tournaments, following her exit from the Japan Open due to injury. She began the year representing Japan at the United Cup in Perth but faced health challenges during the matches, impacting her performance.

Despite expressing optimism before the Australian Open, Osaka faced setbacks due to health issues affecting her preparation and gameplay. She remains focused on taking each day and match as it comes, prioritizing her recovery and well-being.

Osaka’s unforeseen exit from the Australian Open adds to her recent string of health-related challenges, underscoring the importance of balancing competitive aspirations with physical well-being in professional sports.
