Amy McAuley, a 35-year-old woman, has been sentenced to three years in prison for faking her own death in an attempt to evade criminal charges. McAuley was facing trial for theft and attempted deception related to a fraudulent €10,000 loan from KBC Bank in 2018. She later tried to obtain an additional €5,000 loan using altered documents. The fake death notice for McAuley appeared on RIP.ie, stating her funeral details, nearly a week after the supposed funeral date.
Authorities discovered McAuley’s deception when she contacted the police, posing as her sister, to report her own death. She submitted false death notification forms to Wexford County Council, resulting in the issuance of two death certificates under different name spellings. Gardaí launched an investigation in mid-2023 and found McAuley alive when she was spotted attending a wedding in Enniscorthy.
McAuley admitted guilt to multiple charges, including submitting false documents, attempting to pervert justice, and theft. Her criminal history includes prior convictions for theft and deception. The court sentenced McAuley to three years in prison, describing her actions as a premeditated and deliberate scheme to deceive and evade justice. The judge imposed a total sentence of four years, with the final 12 months suspended under strict conditions. McAuley must also undergo Probation Service supervision upon release.
