Police in the UK were left puzzled after a reported crocodile sighting in a canal sparked a frantic search. The unusual incident occurred along the Trent and Mersey canal near the popular Mercia Marina in Willington. Derbyshire Constabulary initiated what they termed as their “most unusual appeal” due to concerns for public safety.
The sighting of the large reptile came to light when an angler fishing in the canal noticed something unusual floating in the water. Upon closer inspection, the angler discovered what seemed to be a 3ft-long crocodile. The angler placed the seemingly lifeless reptile on the towpath between bridges 22 and 22A, where a passer-by later stumbled upon it. Shocked by the sight of what appeared to be a wild crocodile abandoned on the canal bank, the passer-by took a photo and alerted the police. However, by the time officers arrived at the scene, the ‘crocodile’ had vanished.
Fearing the presence of a real predator on the loose, Derbyshire Constabulary issued their unprecedented appeal and sought assistance from the Canal and River Trust, responsible for managing a significant portion of the UK’s inland waterways.
The situation took a humorous turn when a local fisherman informed the police that the crocodile was not genuine but a taxidermy model filled with hay. The model had apparently been unintentionally caught while fishing and left on the bank. Subsequently, officers confirmed on social media that the scare was a false alarm, stating that the incident turned out to be “more fluff than fear.”
In a light-hearted manner, the police quipped, “Dealing with a crocodile in Derbyshire is not an everyday occurrence!” They expressed gratitude to everyone who shared the appeal and revealed that the mystery had been resolved, clarifying that a member of the public had come forward to explain the situation.
The police acknowledged the public’s support, shares, and good humor throughout the incident.
