Mexican authorities announced the discovery of a hidden burial site near the popular tourist destination of Cancun, where the bodies of at least 16 individuals have been found. The clandestine grave was uncovered in a town called Leona Vicario, situated 26 miles west of Cancun. The remains, which have yet to be identified, were scattered across 10 different locations on the property, concealed under layers of cement and quicklime.
According to Quintana Roo’s attorney general, Raciel Lopez Salazar, there may be additional victims as investigations are ongoing at five more “forensic interest” points within the vicinity. Despite Quintana Roo being renowned for its tourism, the discovery of such burials is more common in other regions of Mexico like Jalisco, Michoacan, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz. This finding adds to Mexico’s staggering number of over 133,000 missing persons, with the majority disappearing in the past two decades.
