Alcaraz Makes History, Upsets Djokovic in Australian Open Final

Published:

Novak Djokovic playfully remarked that he still had plenty of time to achieve his goal of winning a 25th Grand Slam singles title after his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the Australian Open final. Alcaraz triumphed over Djokovic with a score of 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5, becoming the youngest man at 22 to secure all four Majors.

The 38-year-old Djokovic aimed to be the first player to reach 25 singles titles but fell short once again against Alcaraz, who previously thwarted him in the 2024 Wimbledon final. Alcaraz surpassed Rafael Nadal’s record as the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam, a fact that Djokovic emphasized due to the significant age difference in his post-match remarks in Melbourne.

During the on-court ceremony, Djokovic congratulated Alcaraz on his historic and legendary performance, wishing him success in his future career. Djokovic humorously noted their youthfulness and anticipated facing each other for the next decade, albeit jokingly.

Alcaraz’s victory marked the ninth consecutive men’s Grand Slam singles title won by either a Spaniard or Jannik Sinner across the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open. Alcaraz now boasts seven Major titles, while Sinner has secured four.

Although Djokovic’s dominance era seems to have passed since his last Major win at the 2023 US Open, he remains determined in his pursuit of a 25th title despite being seeded fourth in Melbourne. Djokovic expressed gratitude to his team for their enduring support and acknowledged the challenges and successes they faced together over the years.

In his speech, Alcaraz commended Djokovic for his inspirational dedication and hard work, acknowledging the impact he has not only on tennis players but on athletes globally, including himself. Alcaraz expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete against Djokovic and praised him for being a source of inspiration.
