The police oversight agency in the province is conducting an investigation following a collision between a police car and a civilian vehicle in Pickering, Ontario, on Friday. According to Monica Hudon, a spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), a Durham Regional Police Service officer was driving on Kingston Road around 7:30 p.m. while responding to an emergency call.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Kingston Road and Brock Road, resulting in injuries to the occupants of the civilian vehicle. Hudon mentioned that one of the passengers, a child, sustained a severe injury and was taken to the hospital.
Durham police confirmed that their officers were en route to a call when the collision took place at Kingston Road and Brock Road on Friday evening. Constable Nick Gluckstein stated in an email to CBC Toronto that the SIU was notified and had begun its investigation as per its mandate.
Following the incident, a social media post by Durham police informed the public that Kingston Road was closed at Brock Road in both directions, with southbound traffic on Brock Road from Finch Avenue also being diverted for collision examination. By 2 a.m. on Saturday, Durham police reported that the affected roadways had been reopened.
