Jannik Sinner, the current top-ranked male tennis player globally, has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open due to a knee injury. Having not competed since securing his second consecutive Wimbledon championship last month, Sinner also opted out of the National Bank Open in Montreal that commenced the previous week. The 24-year-old Italian holds five Grand Slam titles and is just one victory away from completing a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open.
In a statement released by tournament officials, Sinner stated, “After discussions with my medical team, I regret to announce my withdrawal from the Cincinnati Masters 1000 tournament. Despite intensive efforts with my medical advisors, my right knee remains a concern, and I acknowledge that I am not yet fit to compete. I am disappointed not to participate in Cincinnati but look forward to returning next year and am now focusing on preparing for the U.S. Open.”
Following Sinner’s decision, Carlos Alcaraz also declared his withdrawal from the Cincinnati hard-court event due to a persistent wrist injury, further depriving fans in Cincinnati of the opportunity to witness the top two male players in action at the upcoming men’s singles event starting Saturday.
Two years ago, Sinner claimed the Cincinnati title, a crucial lead-up to the U.S. Open, which he subsequently won. However, in the previous year, Alcaraz defeated Sinner in the U.S. Open final, ending his winning streak. The 23-year-old Spanish player will seek to defend his title as the main draw of the tournament commences on August 30.
