“Study Shows Flight Attendants and Pilots Face Higher Radiation Cancer Risk”

A recent study has revealed that flight attendants and pilots face a higher risk of radiation-related cancer mortality compared to individuals working with radioactive materials. This increased risk stems from cosmic radiation originating from space, with heightened exposure experienced by individuals operating at high altitudes during flight.

The study, published by JAMA Internal Medicine, utilized national data from over 12 million death certificates to analyze cancer death rates associated with radiation exposure. The research focused on cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and various other forms linked to radiation, including those affecting the skin, breast, thyroid, prostate, and central nervous system.

Among more than 500 different occupations examined, flight attendants exhibited the highest percentage of deaths attributed to radiation-related cancers, followed by pilots. Both groups displayed significantly elevated odds of mortality from radiation-related cancers. Notably, neither group demonstrated elevated death rates from cancers not linked to radiation exposure, supporting the hypothesis that occupational radiation exposure drives the observed excess mortality.

The study also challenges the belief that flight crews’ increased risk of skin cancer arises solely from sun exposure during layovers in sunny destinations. Researchers suggest that cockpit environments might play a more crucial role in increasing skin cancer rates among pilots.

Flight attendants were found to have a 50% higher likelihood of dying from radiation-related cancers compared to the general working population, while pilots had a 36% higher chance. The study’s lead author, Dr. Vishal Patel from Harvard Medical School, highlighted the absolute risk percentages, revealing that approximately 6.9% of flight attendant deaths and 6.7% of pilot deaths were attributed to radiation-related cancers.

However, the study acknowledged limitations, such as the inability to quantify specific radiation exposure levels for individual flight crew members or potential misclassification of occupations on death certificates. The complexity of disentangling various overlapping exposures like cosmic radiation, UV-A light, and circadian disruption was also highlighted in the study.

Moreover, the study emphasized the unrecognized risk factors related to frequent disruption of the body’s internal clock, which could exacerbate cancer risks for flight crew members. The Federal Aviation Administration’s lack of federal dose limits or monitoring requirements for ionizing radiation exposure among aircrews was also noted.

In response to the study’s findings, advocates have emphasized the need for increased awareness and monitoring of radiation exposure risks among flight crew members. Recommendations include regular skin examinations, earlier or more frequent mammograms for female crew members, and heightened vigilance for cancer during medical evaluations of pilots and flight attendants.
