Skate Canada made an announcement on Wednesday regarding the upcoming departure of Mike Slipchuk as high-performance director following the conclusion of the 2026-27 season. Slipchuk has held this position for two decades since joining Skate Canada in 2006. During his tenure, Canadian figure skaters achieved notable success, securing a total of 10 Olympic and 24 world championship medals.
The 2018 Pyeongchang Games saw Canada clinch four Olympic medals under Slipchuk’s leadership, with ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, along with the team event skaters, claiming gold. Virtue and Moir’s gold medal made them the most accomplished Olympic figure skaters in history, with three gold and two silver medals.
In recent years, Canada’s Olympic performance has been less stellar, with no medals at the Beijing Games in 2022 and only one bronze medal captured by Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier in ice dance at the Milan Cortina Games earlier this year.
Over the past two decades, Canada has seen success in producing world champions across various disciplines. Notably, Patrick Chan secured three consecutive men’s world titles from 2011 to 2013, and Virtue and Moir garnered three gold medals. The most recent world champions from Canada were pairs skaters Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps in 2024.
Following his resignation, Slipchuk will continue to support Skate Canada in an advisory capacity to facilitate the transition to a new high-performance director. Reflecting on his time with Skate Canada, Slipchuk expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the high-performance program, emphasizing the profound impact of working alongside exceptional athletes and coaches. He highlighted the enduring memories of witnessing Canadian athletes stand on the podium with their medals and the national flag draped over their shoulders.
