Five high-ranking Iranian officials are set to be sanctioned for their involvement in activities that disrupt international peace in the Strait of Hormuz, as per Canada’s foreign affairs minister. The minister emphasized the significance of freedom of navigation in the strait for global trade and energy security. The sanctions target individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) who have jeopardized the international waterway’s stability.
Among those sanctioned are Ali Abdollahi, Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Ebrahim Azizi, Shahram Irani, and Hamid Hosseini. With these actions, Canada has now imposed sanctions on a total of 232 individuals and 260 entities tied to Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic sectors, according to Global Affairs Canada.
The sanctions come amid efforts to reach a peace agreement involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, which has faced challenges since its initial agreement in June. The conflict, initiated by a U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran in February, has caused disruptions in the strait, a vital route for global oil and natural gas transportation. Despite calls for de-escalation and international cooperation, tensions persist, impacting global oil supply and economic stability.
