“Bridge Owner Meets Canadian Officials Amid Competing Trade Routes”

Published:

The owner of the Ambassador Bridge in the United States, Matthew Moroun, requested a meeting with senior Canadian government officials regarding the Gordie Howe International Bridge more than three months before its opening. The details of the meeting remain largely undisclosed. The briefing notes obtained under the Access to Information Act revealed that the meeting took place on April 7 and included Moroun, a senior lawyer, and a financial executive from his family’s companies, along with Canadian officials from Housing Infrastructure and Communities Canada.

While Moroun initiated the meeting, significant portions of the agenda and the government’s analysis of the discussion were redacted. The Ambassador Bridge, a crucial trade link handling over $140 billion in merchandise trade in 2021, faced potential traffic diversion to the new Gordie Howe Bridge, as estimated by the U.S. government.

Despite efforts to obtain Moroun’s perspective on the meeting, the Ambassador Bridge did not respond to CBC News before the article’s publication. The Canadian government, under pressure to open the Gordie Howe Bridge, engaged in discussions with private bridge owners to enhance trade corridors and economic activities on both sides of the border.

Following the meeting, the Ambassador Bridge announced toll rate reductions for some users, positioning them slightly below the rates planned for the Gordie Howe Bridge. The changing competitive landscape posed challenges for the Ambassador Bridge, leading to a shift in strategies to protect its business interests. The briefing notes highlighted the acknowledgment from Moroun that the Gordie Howe Bridge would proceed to opening, indicating a shift towards competition from a longstanding monopoly.

The involvement of a privately owned international crossing alongside a publicly owned competitor raised concerns about transparency and diplomatic relations between Canada and the United States. With the Gordie Howe Bridge becoming a reality, the Ambassador Bridge faced new challenges in maintaining its market position. The Moroun family’s opposition and legal challenges over the years underscored their efforts to safeguard their business interests amidst changing dynamics in the bridge industry.
