The renowned calypso music pioneer, The Mighty Sparrow, passed away at the age of 91, after a brief illness in New York. Born as Slinger Francisco, he was surrounded by his family during his peaceful passing, as confirmed by his family. Known for his exceptional skills as a singer, songwriter, and mentor, Francisco was a highly respected figure in the entertainment industry.

Originally from Grand Roy, Grenada, Francisco migrated to Trinidad and Tobago in his early years. Trinidad and Tobago, being the birthplace of calypso music, nurtured The Mighty Sparrow’s talent, leading to the creation of numerous hit songs in the genre such as “Jean and Dinah,” “Both of Them,” “Congo Man,” “Mr. Walker,” and “The Lizard.”

The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad Bissessar, praised The Mighty Sparrow for carrying the spirit and stories of their people worldwide through his music. He was honored with national awards in Trinidad and Tobago, and in 1987, he received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of the West Indies.

Leaders from various countries, including Jamaica, Barbados, and Dominica, paid tribute to The Mighty Sparrow, recognizing his significant contributions to Caribbean culture. Over his six-decade career, Francisco recorded hundreds of songs and performed at prestigious venues like Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Apart from his party-themed calypso hits, The Mighty Sparrow also delved into topical and political issues through songs like “Model Nation,” “Martin Luther King For President,” and “Kennedy and Kruschev.” He even celebrated Toronto’s Caribana festival with the song “Toronto Mas” in 1972.

Despite his passing, The Mighty Sparrow’s legacy lives on, as he was hailed as a cultural revolutionary and one of the greatest calypsonians by Trinidadian cultural historian Rudolph Ottley. Francisco’s dedication to advancing the art of calypso music remained unwavering throughout his career.
