The Israeli government has issued a warning to intensify “targeted strikes” on Gaza unless Hamas acts to prevent the launching of kites by Palestinians, including children, towards Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement shared on the social media platform X, disclosed that he and Defence Minister Israel Katz conducted a “situational assessment” on Sunday evening to address the threat of drones, balloons, and kites launched from Gaza towards Israel. The meeting was attended by Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, the chief of the general staff, the head of the National Security Council, and senior officials from the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel had cautioned Hamas that if the launches did not stop immediately, the IDF would escalate targeted strikes against those responsible for the launches and evacuate the population from areas used as launch sites for kites, drones, and balloons. He affirmed Israel’s commitment to safeguarding its communities and citizens’ sense of security from any threats posed by Hamas or any other group in Gaza.
Despite the tensions, for 13-year-old Omar Halawa, flying a kite along the shore in Khan Younis offers a brief escape from the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Omar shared that flying kites brings joy in a place where happiness is scarce. He expressed awareness of the warnings issued by Netanyahu regarding kite flyers, emphasizing that they are children who seek peace and safety.
Prior to the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, burning kites and balloons originating from Gaza caused fires and damage. Israeli authorities reported the discovery of several kites near a kibbutz close to Gaza, with no weapons attached. Netanyahu’s recent stance coincides with Israeli strikes and tank fire that resulted in casualties, including two children, following a U.S. delegation’s call to reduce attacks.
Hamas, in a statement on the Telegram messaging platform, criticized Netanyahu’s warnings about children flying kites, alleging a deliberate intent to continue aggression and displacement. The group condemned Israel’s recent strikes as brutal acts against Palestinians, calling for international condemnation and urging adherence to a ceasefire plan for Gaza.
Omar expressed fear over flying kites due to potential strikes and the risk to those around him. His mother, Yasmin Halawa, highlighted the significance of the kite to her son’s dwindling joys amid the conflict. She voiced concerns about potential restrictions on children’s activities due to security concerns raised by Israel.
As dusk fell, the children continued flying kites near their tents, adapting their activities amidst the ongoing tensions in the region.
