“Canada Races to Develop Own Rocket amid SpaceX Concerns”

Published:

Canada, as the only G7 nation without its own rocket launch capabilities, is striving to develop a Canadian-made rocket. Several Canadian companies are in a race to provide the country with its own access to space, particularly as concerns grow among some SpaceX customers about potential decreases in launches into orbit. The path to space is challenging for these rocket companies due to the high cost, tight deadlines, and shifting government priorities they face.

Since Canada lacks the ability to launch rockets domestically, Canadian customers, including private companies and governments, rely on external providers to deploy their satellites into orbit, mostly American ones like SpaceX. These satellites play crucial roles in telecommunications, military operations such as threat detection, and earth observation tasks like monitoring wildfires.

The Canadian government has recognized space as a key sovereign capability and introduced legislation to authorize launches from Canadian soil. Recent funding initiatives, including $8.3 million for three Canadian companies, aim to achieve light-lift rocket capabilities by 2028. NordSpace, one of these companies, is focused on building satellites, robotic space technologies, and the necessary launch infrastructure. Despite an unsuccessful suborbital rocket test in 2025, they plan to attempt again soon.

Another company, Reaction Dynamics, has been developing a unique engine design since 2017 with the goal of achieving orbit by 2028. The newest player, Canada Rocket Company, aims to build a medium-lift rocket capable of carrying multiple satellites into low Earth orbit simultaneously. With private investments totaling $22 million, they are making progress towards their goal.

As SpaceX transitions to its Starship rocket, concerns arise among customers who rely on the Falcon 9 for satellite launches. The potential reduction in Falcon 9 services could create opportunities for emerging rocket manufacturers. Canadian companies like Canada Rocket Company are eyeing this market gap as they work towards establishing themselves in the aerospace industry.

While progress is being made, challenges remain in securing the necessary funding and expertise to launch rockets successfully. The road to achieving regular space launches from Canada will require sustained efforts and substantial investments from both private and public sources.
