“California Governor Predicts Trump Return to Canada Talks”

Published:

California Governor Gavin Newsom predicts that internal pressure within the Republican Party will compel President Donald Trump to return to negotiations with Canada. In an interview with CBC News chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton, Newsom expressed that Trump is facing significant criticism from his own party. This development comes as the U.S. approaches midterm elections, where the Republican majority in Congress is at risk.

Recent trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. collapsed, leading to Prime Minister Mark Carney suspending negotiations following Trump’s imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods worth approximately $28 billion. Newsom believes that Trump will soon be compelled to resume negotiations, estimating a timeframe of no more than two to three weeks.

Expressing California’s disapproval of Trump’s actions towards Canada, Newsom condemned the president’s behavior. The ongoing trade war has particularly impacted California, with the state’s wine industry experiencing significant challenges. California wines have been absent from many Canadian shelves for over a year, resulting in a substantial decline in wine exports to Canada.

When asked about potential animosity from California wine makers towards Canada, Newsom acknowledged the existence of such sentiments. He attributed the situation to Trump’s actions, asserting that California stands in opposition to the president’s policies. Despite the challenges faced by the wine industry, Newsom commended Prime Minister Carney’s firm approach towards Trump, emphasizing the importance of strength in dealing with the U.S. president.

Newsom, who is not seeking reelection as California’s governor, is considered a potential Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential race. While he did not confirm his intentions to run for president, Newsom acknowledged that fate could play a role in his future decisions. His stance against Trump’s tariffs is not driven by political aspirations but by a genuine concern for the impact on California and the nation as a whole.
