A massive pumpkin grown by Jeff Warner weighing 1,711 pounds was disqualified from the Port Elgin Pumpkinfest weigh-off due to a small soft spot detected on the vegetable. Despite being aware of the competition’s stringent rules on entry conditions, Warner decided to transport his giant pumpkin to the event, hoping it would still qualify. However, as he made the journey, the soft spot on the pumpkin worsened, leading to disqualification upon inspection at the festival.
Warner made efforts to salvage the pumpkin by scraping away at the soft spot during his trip, but the damage continued to expand. Upon arrival, a judge measured the hole and deemed it too large to meet the competition guidelines, resulting in disqualification. The winning pumpkin at the event weighed 1,542 pounds, lighter than Warner’s impressive garden giant.
Although Warner expressed disappointment at not clinching the top prize, he reflected positively on the time and effort invested in nurturing his giant pumpkins. Despite missing out on the victory, Warner’s oversized pumpkin continues to attract attention, with families stopping by to view and take photos with it. Warner plans to repurpose his massive pumpkin by feeding it to polar bears at a polar habitat a couple of hours north of his location.
