Krista Scharf to Lead Team Despins in 2026-2027 Curling Season

Published:

In preparation for the upcoming 2026 to 2027 season, Krista Scharf, a curler from Thunder Bay, Ontario, is set to lead Team Despins as skip.

After a decade of competing together, Scharf’s previous team disbanded in March, citing a shift towards family priorities. Despite this, they left the door open for potential future curling endeavors. Scharf, who has represented both Ontario and Northern Ontario at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts 12 times, clinching two silver medals and two bronze medals, has now decided to return to the sport with Team Despins.

Expressing her excitement about the opportunity, Scharf shared in an interview with CBC News that she had missed the sport since taking a break. Originally planning to focus on coaching her children, she found herself drawn back to competitive play by Team Despins, who approached her a few weeks ago due to a vacancy caused by Nicole Westlund-Stewart’s back injury rehabilitation.

Acknowledging the adjustment of joining a new team, Scharf highlighted her intention to bring her experience to the squad and assist her new teammates. The team aims to compete for the Northern Ontario championship and secure a spot at the 2027 Scotties, emphasizing the need for rigorous practice to achieve their goals.

With Abby Deschene joining the team as a new player, Scharf emphasized the importance of dedicated practice sessions, drawing from her past team’s successful approach. As they gear up for the upcoming competition in January, Scharf plans to maximize training opportunities with her teammates, aiming to deliver their best performance and qualify for the Scotties.

The team roster includes Robyn Despins at third, Deschene at second, Rebecca Carr at lead, and Westlund-Stewart in the fifth position.

By December, Scharf anticipates ramping up practice sessions to support her teammates and strive for success in the upcoming season.
