A 31-year-old mother has been arrested after her one-year-old son drowned in the bathtub reportedly left unattended for around 15 minutes. Courtney Marie Newsom faces charges including felony manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a minor.
Emergency services responded to a call at the family residence on September 7, where they found Newsom performing CPR on her son. Despite efforts to save him, the child succumbed to the incident on September 13.
Initial statements from Newsom suggested she had briefly left the bathroom while her children were in the bath. However, a subsequent interview revealed she had been out of the room for 14 minutes, leading to the tragic incident.
Following a warrant for her arrest, Newsom appeared in court on October 15 and was ordered to post bail of $15,000 (£11,300). She is set for arraignment on November 25.
