“Ronnie O’Sullivan Embraces Mark Williams’ Winning Mindset”

Published:

Stephen Hendry believes that Ronnie O’Sullivan is emulating Mark Williams’ approach after a positive start to the season. O’Sullivan had a challenging 2024/25 season, withdrawing from several tournaments due to cue damage in January.

Having announced a reduced schedule, the 49-year-old has displayed a rejuvenated and focused performance when competing. Notably, he achieved two maximum breaks in a single match on his way to the final of the Saudi Arabia Masters, narrowly losing to Neil Robertson in the deciding frame. O’Sullivan also showed good form at the Xi’an Grand Prix, reaching the quarter-finals before being stopped by Gary Wilson.

The Xi’an Grand Prix title was claimed by Williams, a member of the ‘Class of 92’, who defeated Shaun Murphy in the final to become the oldest-ever winner of a ranking event at 50 years and 206 days. Williams’ calm demeanor has been pivotal to his ongoing success, with a resilient attitude that Hendry believes has influenced O’Sullivan.

In a discussion on the WST’s Snooker Club podcast, Hendry, a seven-time world champion, commented, “I think Ronnie’s trying to emulate Mark’s attitude. Ronnie has recognized the value in adopting that mindset.”

Hendry commended Williams for maintaining a high level of play despite minimal practice outside of competitions. He praised Williams, stating, “That’s why I see him as my inspiration for his lifestyle and approach. He doesn’t obsess over practice. While he works hard during events, he remains unfazed by wins or losses, which is a formidable trait in any sport. It immediately sets them apart in terms of composure from their opponents.”
