“Mother of Murdered Woman Urges Swift Inquiry Start”

Published:

A mother determined to seek justice for her daughter’s death has issued a heartfelt plea to authorities, expressing concerns that time is running out for her to uncover the truth. Emma Caldwell, aged 27, was tragically found deceased in a wooded area, five weeks after she went missing from Glasgow city center in April 2005. Her killer, Iain Packer, was not brought to justice until nearly two decades later.

The case resurfaced in 2015 following a newspaper article labeling Packer as the “Forgotten Suspect,” prompting a fresh investigation due to suspected police misconduct. Packer was ultimately sentenced to life in prison in February of the following year, with the Scottish Government committing to an impartial public inquiry.

Despite this commitment, the inquiry has yet to commence, causing distress to Emma’s mother, Margaret, who has tirelessly fought for justice since her daughter’s tragic demise. Margaret, aged 77, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Time is not on my side. Some victims have already passed away. This public inquiry must start immediately before it’s too late for me or others.”

Margaret is scheduled to meet with Solicitor General Ruth Charteris to push for the prompt initiation of the investigation. They believe the delay is linked to a separate criminal probe involving officers connected to the original case, as reported by the Daily Record.

Expressing disappointment in the prolonged delay, Margaret criticized the Solicitor General for hindering the inquiry’s commencement by suggesting an external police force from England should investigate Police Scotland, a move she deemed impractical and counterproductive.

Packer’s conviction for Emma’s murder and numerous other offenses brought closure to a longstanding cold case marred by errors and mishandlings. Despite being interviewed multiple times during the initial investigation, Packer evaded arrest until 2022, even after confessing to his involvement in Emma’s disappearance.

Margaret’s legal representative, Aamer Anwar, has demanded accountability for those responsible for the case’s mishandling and urged for the inquiry to proceed without further delays. Anwar stressed the importance of uncovering the truth through the inquiry, advocating for the voices of the Caldwell family and other survivors to be heard.

As efforts intensify to kickstart the public inquiry, both Margaret and her legal team are resolute in their pursuit of justice for Emma and all victims affected by the case.
