The Rugby League Ashes is making a comeback on the BBC after a hiatus of more than 20 years. Originating in 1908, the historic series between Great Britain and Australia had a long-standing tradition until its abrupt end in 2003. Now, England is stepping in as the challenger to Australia, as the Great Britain brand faded away in 2006.
Having last faced Australia in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup final, England, under the guidance of head coach Shaun Wane, will carry the legacy forward. The series will unfold across three English venues, commencing at Wembley Stadium on October 25, followed by matches at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and AMT Headingley Stadium.
BBC One and BBC iPlayer will broadcast all three matches live, featuring a lineup of renowned personalities like Mark Chapman, Sam Burgess, and Kev Brown. Jonathan ‘Jiffy’ Davies will provide co-commentary alongside lead commentator Matt Newsum, ensuring comprehensive coverage for fans.
The return of the Rugby League Ashes marks a significant milestone for the sport, with Rhodri Jones expressing delight over the tests being aired on BBC One. The event aims to reignite the iconic rivalry between England and Australia, promising to deliver classic sporting moments for viewers across the nation.
