Anthony Joshua, the former two-time heavyweight champion, has resumed training at the boxing gym nearly three weeks after a fatal car crash in Nigeria. Joshua was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck near Lagos, resulting in the tragic deaths of two close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Their funerals were held in London on January 4.
During his time in Nigeria for a holiday and family visit, Joshua was involved in the incident shortly after his victory over Jake Paul. Although he received hospital treatment and was discharged on New Year’s Eve, speculations arose regarding his future in boxing.
However, recent images shared by Joshua on Snapchat show him back in the gym, engaging in what he refers to as “mental strength therapy.” The pictures capture him working out, hitting pads, doing lower leg exercises, and using a stationary bike. Additionally, footage shows Joshua in a pool for training.
Despite claims from Joshua’s uncle on January 6 that the boxer had decided to retire following the crash, sources close to Joshua have indicated that he has not made a final decision. The driver of the car, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged over the crash, facing allegations of causing death by dangerous driving among other charges.
Joshua, who narrowly escaped the car crash, was reported to have originally been seated in the front before moving to the back at the driver’s request. As he processes the aftermath of the incident, Joshua is expected to take time before considering his next steps in his career.
In a recent interview, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, emphasized that no discussions are ongoing regarding Joshua’s fighting future. Hearn expressed the need for Joshua to have space and time to recover from the traumatic event before making any decisions. The focus remains on Joshua’s well-being and recovery, with no rush for him to return to boxing.
