Police in Nigeria are set to charge Anthony Joshua’s driver with ‘reckless driving’ following a tragic crash that resulted in the deaths of two of the boxer’s close associates. Reports from The Daily Mail indicate that a 47-year-old member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, who has been with him on visits to the country, will face charges within the next 48 hours.
The driver was discharged from a hospital in Lagos on New Year’s Eve and subsequently transported to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state, where the crash occurred earlier in the week.
After being questioned for several hours, the driver provided an official statement detailing the events leading up to the crash, which tragically claimed the lives of Joshua’s close friends, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele.
Joshua, who has also been released from the hospital, paid his respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home alongside his mother before their repatriation to the UK.
A police source mentioned to the Mail, “The driver, now in stable condition, was treated for minor injuries and then taken to the state police headquarters for interrogation. A charging decision is expected within 48 hours, potentially resulting in a court appearance for reckless driving.”
During the incident, Joshua was traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The driver of the truck, who fled the scene, has been declared wanted by the police. Babatunde Akinbiyi of Ogun State’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency cited overspeeding and a burst tire as contributing factors to the crash.
Eddie Hearn, chairman of Matchroom, Joshua’s promotional company, paid tribute to Ghami and Ayodele following their passing, expressing his condolences and prayers for their families.
