“Asteroid Bennu Holds Clues to Life’s Origins”

An approaching asteroid is packed with essential elements for life, according to scientists, potentially reshaping our understanding of the cosmos.

Researchers unearthed signs of ancient water and a peculiar substance dubbed ‘space gum’ on an asteroid named Bennu. The breakthrough emerged from a portion of Bennu retrieved by a spacecraft from a distance of 63 million kilometers (39 million miles) away and safely brought back to Earth.

Communications specialist Alexandra Doten shared the groundbreaking discovery on TikTok, emphasizing the sample’s potential to provide new insights into life’s origins.

Scientists at Tohoku University in Japan identified crucial sugars in the rock, a first in extraterrestrial samples. Meanwhile, NASA experts were puzzled by a pliable, gum-like material unique to the solar system. Alexandra conveyed the team’s remarkable findings, underscoring the asteroid’s high carbon content, water presence, and significance as potential building blocks for life.

Bennu is rich in nitrogen, organic compounds, and the mineral serpentine, resembling rocks found in Earth’s underwater mid-ocean ridges. Alexandra suggested that the asteroid could be a remnant of an ancient water world traversing space for eons, pointing out the presence of amino acids, nucleotide bases, and essential sugars for biological processes.

Notably, all components necessary for RNA formation, including ribose, were found on Bennu, hinting at RNA’s prevalence and potential as a primary form of early life in the universe. Another study led by NASA researchers detailed the discovery of a gum-like material on the asteroid, exhibiting unique properties under radiation exposure.

Furthermore, a separate study uncovered a substantial amount of dust from supernova explosions predating our solar system. These findings shed light on the complex composition and history of asteroids, offering valuable insights into the origins of life beyond Earth.
