“Australian Beef Pricing Raises Concerns in Canadian Market”

Published:

Australian beef is available in Canadian supermarkets at lower prices compared to Canadian beef, raising concerns among some producers and delighting consumers seeking affordable options. Tyler Fulton, the president of the Canadian Cattle Association, noted the longstanding presence of Australian beef in the market, particularly in steak cuts. Various factors contribute to the pricing disparity, including the leaner nature and different production model of Australian beef, which features grass-based systems with minimal marbling.

The increased access of Australian beef to the Canadian market since the implementation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in 2018 has impacted local producers. While the agreement also benefits Canada by providing preferred access to markets like Japan and Vietnam, some consumers have shifted to imported beef due to cost considerations. However, concerns remain regarding the quality comparison between Australian and Canadian beef.

Shoppers at Loblaws-owned stores in Regina shared their perspectives, with some expressing difficulty affording Canadian beef and opting for alternatives like salads. Others, like Jordan Fieseler and Larry Evans, emphasized the importance of choice and cost in their purchasing decisions. Loblaws reiterated its commitment to supporting Canadian beef producers while offering customers value and variety.

Fulton remains optimistic about the growth prospects for Canadian producers, highlighting recent increases in the domestic beef cow herd. He stressed the importance of balancing domestic and international opportunities to ensure the sector’s sustainability and profitability.
