Michelle Tolley was elated when she received recognition at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards for her advocacy work. In addition to this honor, a delightful surprise awaited her. The 60-year-old, humorously referring to herself as “59 plus one,” has devoted herself to seeking justice for over 30,000 individuals affected by the NHS infected blood scandal.
In the previous year, Michelle, along with fellow campaigners Andrew Evans and Jason Evans, was honored with a Pride of Britain Special Recognition Award. During the awards ceremony, while standing on stage with other winners, she witnessed midwife Agnes Nisbett being presented with a cruise holiday by P&O Cruises, the new main sponsor of the awards. To everyone’s amazement, it was revealed that all winners, including Michelle, would receive the same prize in 2024.
After enduring years of poor health and tirelessly supporting her fellow victims while holding the government accountable, Michelle’s well-deserved surprise of a relaxing holiday came as a welcomed relief. Michelle contracted hepatitis C through a blood transfusion after giving birth to her first child in 1987. Her symptoms were disregarded by a doctor for 28 years before she received a proper diagnosis and began treatment.
Determined to turn her anger into something positive, Michelle established and managed a support group for fellow sufferers, collaborated with the Hepatitis C Trust, and provided testimony at the official government inquiry. The opportunity for a tranquil vacation was a stark contrast to her years of struggle, especially since she and her husband, Dean, had not traveled abroad since their marriage in 1984.
Their plans for a Canary Islands cruise holiday in May coincided with their 40th wedding anniversary, prompting thoughts of renewing their vows. P&O Cruises, upon hearing Michelle’s wish, coordinated a vow renewal ceremony for the couple, complete with a beautiful bouquet, professional photographs, a framed picture, and two delightful meals.
Sailing aboard the Ventura, Michelle, whose only previous sailing experience was as a child, marveled at the grandeur of the ship, likening it to the excitement of Christmas morning. The couple relished every moment on board, taking advantage of the amenities, dining experiences, shopping options, pools, and theatrical performances, while also exploring Madeira and the Canary Islands.
Their adventures ashore included a tour around Madeira with a friendly taxi driver named Manuel and a humorous tuk-tuk escapade in Las Palmas. The couple also explored Lisbon through a coach and river cruise, immersing themselves in the city’s views and historical landmarks.
Michelle and Dean were so captivated by their cruise experience that they are eager to repeat it. Michelle described their treatment on board as royal-like, feeling like the queen of Ventura. She highly recommends a cruise holiday to everyone, emphasizing the fantastic facilities and the exceptional hospitality of the staff.
