Anthony Joshua narrowly escaped a tragic fate by changing seats just before a fatal accident that claimed the lives of two of his close friends. The accident occurred on Monday, resulting in Joshua sustaining minor injuries and being hospitalized. The driver of the vehicle has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, claiming that the brakes failed.
Reports indicate that the journey initially started in Lagos, where Joshua was asked to switch seats due to visibility issues. His friends, Ghami and Ayodele, who were also long-time associates and part of Joshua’s inner circle, tragically lost their lives in the crash.
The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, faced multiple charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless driving, and driving without a valid license. The case was adjourned to January 20, as confirmed by the Ogun State Police Command.
Following the incident, tributes poured in from the boxing community, with Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, and other champions expressing their condolences. Joshua, who had been on holiday in Nigeria after his recent victory over Jake Paul in Miami, was released from the hospital on New Year’s Eve.
In a joint statement with Ogun state, it was announced that Joshua was discharged and deemed fit to recover at home. He and his mother paid their respects at the funeral home in Lagos to honor their departed friends before their repatriation.
The boxing world mourns the loss of Ghami and Ayodele, who were integral members of Joshua’s team, known for their energy and loyalty. Joshua has yet to make a public statement regarding the accident.
