A young boy, aged nine, narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation at his residence when a charging cable got tangled with a metal chain around his neck, causing a fire.
The incident occurred on October 19 when Laura Morrow was awakened at 5 am by a distressing situation involving her son, Ashtyn Pitts, who sustained severe burns on his neck and left hand in Jena, Louisiana.
Upon hearing his cries, his parents rushed to his aid, and he was promptly taken to the emergency room. Subsequently, he was transferred to the LSU-Oschner Burn Unit in Shreveport for further treatment.
Ashtyn was sleeping when his necklace became entangled with his charging cable, prompting his mother to issue a heartfelt plea to other mothers cautioning against leaving electronic devices charging in beds.
According to his mother’s account on Facebook, Pitts was sleeping beside his charger, which was connected to an extension cord. During the night, a slight separation at the connection point allowed the necklace to come into contact with the charger’s prongs.
Pitts described the terrifying moment as a loud bang that woke him up, leading to panic and calls for help. The burns he suffered were so severe that the chain’s pattern was visibly scorched into his neck.
After the incident, Morrow was overwhelmed with emotion witnessing her son’s pain and the realization of how close they were to a tragic outcome. She expressed gratitude that Ashtyn is now in stable condition and is expected to fully recover.
The family’s harrowing experience serves as a cautionary tale about the potential dangers of electronic devices and the importance of vigilance in their use.
