“Captivating Photos Showcased in Global Ecological Research Competition”

Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a global image competition that showcases ecological research through captivating photography. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition honored 11 photos taken by researchers worldwide at different career stages. These images portray animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and various natural scenery.

Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), clinched the research in action category with his photo “Intertidal education.” On the other hand, Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, won the “protecting our planet” category with his image “A bridge between past and present.”

Photographs serve as a means for researchers to document their work and offer a glimpse into the world of science. Brennan emphasized the importance of images in building public trust in environmental education and ecological research. His winning photo, “Intertidal education,” was captured while supervising undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species in St. Andrews, N.B., showcasing a moment of curiosity on their faces under the light of the full moon.

Tian’s winning image, “A bridge between past and present,” composed of 33 drone photos of the Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River, provides a comprehensive view of the ecosystem. This photo highlights the impact of human actions on ecosystems and aims to raise awareness about conservation efforts.

The competition also featured other noteworthy images such as “Window to the Wetlands” by Sritam Kumar Sethy, “A space for frogs” by Ryan Wagner, “Giant cuttlefish in breeding battle” by Victor Huertas, and “Go away” by Alwin Hardenbol. These photos captured unique ecological moments and showcased the beauty and challenges faced by various species and environments.

Through their compelling images, researchers like Brennan and Tian aim to inspire others to appreciate and protect the natural world. The power of photography lies in its ability to evoke natural empathy and connect people to environments they may not directly interact with, fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of ecological conservation.
