A care home has been deemed to require special measures due to the discovery of mice living in mattresses and exposed wires posing a risk of electrocution. During an inspection, it was found that residents were living in extremely unhygienic and unsafe conditions with various issues such as holes in ceilings, exposed electrical wiring, and smoking in inappropriate areas causing damage from cigarette burns.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) conducted the inspection in June and July at Rodney House in Liverpool, where 48 residents were living at the time. Following the inspection, urgent action was taken against the home, which is operated by EBS Services Limited. All residents have been relocated to alternative accommodation as reported by Liverpool Echo.
Specializing in providing support to older individuals, people with mental health conditions, and those with physical disabilities, the care home received an inadequate rating from the CQC and remains under special measures. The CQC’s director of operations in the north, Karen Knapton, highlighted significant failures in leadership resulting in substandard care for the residents.
Issues such as an infestation of flies, mice activity, and poor maintenance were observed during the inspection. The report noted that the state of the care home posed risks of electrocution and injury to both residents and workers due to exposed wiring and other hazards requiring refurbishment and repairs.
Furthermore, the report pointed out cleanliness issues within the facility, including dirty bedrooms, stained furniture, and lack of proper waste disposal facilities. Eight breaches of legal regulations were identified, leading to urgent conditions imposed on EBS Services Limited by the care watchdog.
Ms. Knapton expressed concerns about the undignified conditions residents were subjected to, including delayed response times to calls for help and neglect of basic amenities like television and remote control batteries. The CQC has outlined expectations for immediate improvements and will closely monitor the home to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
