A callous caregiver who stole almost £300,000 from a senior citizen before escaping to Tenerife has been captured on video. Pamela Gwinnett, aged 62, falsely accused Joan Green’s family of theft and manipulation while exploiting her authority as Lasting Power of Attorney to embezzle funds from Mrs. Green.
Following the exposure of her deceit, Gwinnett absconded to Tenerife to live off the stolen money, evading justice. Mrs. Green’s grandson, David, expressed outrage at Gwinnett’s disregard for the law by fleeing to Tenerife.
The perpetrator was sentenced to six years in prison in absentia by Judge Michael Maher at Preston Crown Court. Gwinnett ingratiated herself with the elderly couple, gaining their trust and convincing them to appoint her as Lasting Power of Attorney. Subsequently, she misused her position to squander the money on personal luxuries like beauty treatments, Botox, and property.
After the death of Mrs. Green’s husband in 2019, she was confined in her home near Chorley, Lancashire, under Gwinnett’s control, isolated from her family. Gwinnett manipulated the situation by relocating Mrs. Green to a care facility near her own residence in Adlington during the pandemic, intercepting communications and gifts intended for the elderly woman.
Gwinnett then deceived authorities by claiming Mrs. Green had no family, preventing her stepdaughter and grandson from seeing her. During a visit in June 2021, Gwinnett fabricated lies about the family members, attempting to alienate them from Mrs. Green.
In a recorded incident, Gwinnett falsely accused David of criminal behavior, prompting a confrontation. The video evidence exposed Gwinnett’s bullying tactics towards Mrs. Green, who tragically passed away in 2022 before justice could be served.
Judge Maher, in sentencing Gwinnett for fraud and theft, condemned her shameless actions and expressed hope for her extradition to the UK to face the consequences of her reprehensible crimes. Gwinnett’s manipulative behavior deprived Mrs. Green of companionship and love in her final years, tarnishing her memory for those who cared deeply for her.
