“CIA Director Ratcliffe Meets with Russian Officials in Moscow”

Published:

U.S. CIA Director John Ratcliffe engaged in discussions with Russian intelligence officials during his recent trip to Moscow, as confirmed by the Kremlin on Wednesday. However, there was no meeting between Ratcliffe and President Vladimir Putin. President Donald Trump characterized the visit as “semi-routine.”

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov informed the media that Putin had been briefed on the visit’s outcomes, which occurred amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the stalled peace efforts between the United States and Iran. Peskov refrained from disclosing the specific topics discussed during the meetings.

When asked about the purpose of Ratcliffe’s visit, Trump mentioned in a radio interview that it could potentially yield positive outcomes, particularly in relation to resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Trump expressed optimism about the potential results that may arise from the discussions held during the visit.

Regarding the significance of high-level visits like that of the U.S. CIA director to Moscow, Peskov emphasized the importance of ongoing communications between the intelligence agencies of both countries, even during challenging times in bilateral relations. He acknowledged the potential for such interactions to contribute positively to the overall state of U.S.-Russia relations.

The most recent prior visit by a U.S. CIA director to Moscow occurred in November 2021 when Ratcliffe’s predecessor, William Burns, met with President Putin. Peskov noted that despite the current strained relations between the two countries, maintaining dialogue at the intelligence level could have a constructive impact on the broader bilateral relationship.
