Dog’s Accidental Act Leads to Tragic Death

Published:

A tragic incident occurred when a man lost his life after being run over by his own van due to a dog’s actions. James Campbell, a 68-year-old resident of Cantonment, Tampa, Florida, died in a sudden accident in January 2013. While assisting his wife in reversing their 1995 Chevrolet van into the driveway, Mr. Campbell was fatally struck by the vehicle.

The unfortunate event unfolded as Mr. Campbell stepped out of the van to open the driveway gates, leaving the door ajar. At the same time, his wife, Iris Fortner, was in the driver’s seat and opened her door to locate her husband behind the vehicle. Seizing the opportunity, their pet dog leaped into the driver’s side, inadvertently pressing the accelerator pedal, causing the van to reverse and fatally injure Mr. Campbell.

Despite his wife’s frantic attempts to stop the van, it was too late, and Mr. Campbell was trapped beneath the vehicle, leading to his untimely death. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene, while his wife sustained minor injuries and was taken to West Florida Hospital for treatment. No charges were filed, but the incident highlighted the danger posed by a running vehicle, an unrestrained dog, and an engaged gear.

In an unusual turn of events in the same month, another dog-related incident occurred in Miami. Homeowners were awakened by their dog’s barking and discovered a naked intruder attempting to harm their pet Rottweiler. The homeowner intervened by shooting the intruder in the leg, holding him until the police arrived. The Miami Police Department confirmed the incident, stating that the homeowner’s actions appeared justified given the intruder’s irrational behavior and aggression towards both the dog and the homeowner.

These incidents serve as stark reminders of the unexpected dangers that can arise from pets and strangers in close proximity to homes.
