“DWP Set to Update PIP Assessment Procedures”

Published:

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is set to provide an update on the ongoing review of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) soon. PIP is a benefit aimed at assisting individuals with health challenges, disabilities, or mental health conditions. Proposed modifications to the PIP system, including changes to the eligibility scoring process, were abandoned by the Labour party due to opposition from MPs, disability advocacy groups, and campaigners.

Despite this, the Government is currently reassessing the PIP claiming regulations, with a final decision expected in autumn 2026. Sir Stephen Timms, the Minister for Social Security and Disability, is spearheading the review, which will consider the overall PIP assessment procedure.

Most PIP applicants are required to undergo a health evaluation via phone, video call, or in-person before determining their eligibility. Sir Stephen recently updated on the progress of the Timms Review in response to a parliamentary inquiry.

Conservative MP Bradley Thomas, representing Bromsgrove, inquired about the timeline for evaluating the PIP assessment process and whether disabled individuals, caregivers, and the general public would be involved in the review. In a recent response, Sir Stephen Timms stated that the Timms Review will be collaboratively developed with disabled individuals, their representatives, healthcare professionals, caregivers, experts, MPs, and other stakeholders to ensure diverse perspectives are considered.

The review is expected to be completed by autumn 2026 and will be presented to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions for any necessary decisions. Potential outcomes could involve legislative changes or non-legislative actions based on the review findings. The focus remains on incorporating the feedback received during the engagement process to shape the future direction of the PIP assessment system.
