An elderly woman tragically lost her life on a remote island after missing her cruise ship during a 60-day journey around Australia. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the woman being stranded on the Far North Queensland island.
The 80-year-old solo traveler was part of a cruise that cost around £40,000 but was only reported missing after failing to re-board the ship as scheduled. The cruise departed from Cairns and made a stop at Lizard Island, where the woman was believed to have gone hiking.
Reports suggest that the woman may have become separated from her group during a hike to Cook’s Look summit on Lizard Island. Concerns about safety protocols were raised by witnesses who were aboard a nearby vessel and overheard emergency radio transmissions.
Despite search efforts, the woman’s body was discovered on the island, prompting Coral Expeditions to confirm the tragic incident. The cruise company cooperated with authorities and the woman’s family throughout the investigation.
