Elderly woman found dead on island during Australian cruise

Published:

An elderly woman, aged 80, was discovered deceased on a secluded island after she failed to return to her cruise ship in Australia. The woman was reportedly trekking near the Great Barrier Reef off the Queensland coast on an excursion when she went missing. Her body was found on a mountain a day later following an alert from the ship’s staff. Authorities have stated that there is no suspicion of foul play in relation to the woman’s death.

A large-scale search operation by sea and land was initiated before the woman’s body was located. She was part of a luxury voyage aboard the Coral Adventurer cruise ship and disappeared during an exploration outing. The woman was on a 60-day journey around Australia, with these exclusive trips costing approximately $80,000 (£39,000).

Mark Fifield, the head of Coral Expeditions, confirmed the “tragic death” of the passenger on Lizard Island in an official statement. The company is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation.

Fifield mentioned, “The crew alerted authorities about the missing woman, prompting a search and rescue effort by land and sea. Following the operation, Queensland Police informed Coral Expeditions of the woman’s discovery on Lizard Island.”

“While investigations continue, we express our deep regret over this incident and are providing full support to the woman’s family. Our team is in contact with the family and will continue to assist them through this challenging time.”

“We are collaborating closely with Queensland Police and other relevant authorities to aid in their investigation. Further comments are withheld until the investigation progresses.” Police confirmed that they are preparing a report for the coroner.

According to a source cited by The Australian, the woman was part of a group hiking the steep Cook’s Look walk on the island when she needed to pause on Saturday afternoon. The group allegedly proceeded without her.

Robyn Holmes, the Cook Shire Mayor, conveyed condolences to the woman’s family and friends, recognizing the distressing nature of the situation. Appreciation was extended to all emergency service personnel and agencies involved in the response effort.
