A former police officer from New Jersey, Rebecca Sayegh, age 32, confessed to breaking into her ex-boyfriend’s residence and causing chaos. Authorities from the Berkeley Township Police Department were called to the scene at 11:20 pm on April 25 after receiving reports of a domestic altercation.
Sayegh used her baton to force her way through the front door and confronted her ex-boyfriend and his new partner. The off-duty officer, who previously lived with her ex for five years, engaged in a heated argument with the couple, resulting in physical altercations.
Despite the couple’s attempts to restrain her, Sayegh broke free and proceeded to vandalize the home and damage the victim’s vehicle, according to prosecutors. When the new girlfriend sought refuge in the backyard and called the police, Sayegh continued her aggressive behavior, resisting arrest and even attempting to fight responding officers.
Following her arrest, Sayegh was restrained by officers who warned her about burning down her ex-boyfriend’s residence as she was escorted away. The former officer caused approximately $2,000 in damages to the property and $500 to the vehicle.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office revealed that Sayegh, identified as an off-duty Toms River Township Police Officer, forcibly entered the residence by breaking the front glass door and also vandalized a vehicle parked in the driveway. Sayegh was apprehended at the scene after resisting arrest and subsequently released from Ocean County Jail under New Jersey Bail Reform.
As part of her admission of guilt to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Sayegh relinquished her position at the Toms River Township Police Department and any future public employment opportunities in the state. She is scheduled to be sentenced on January 26 of the upcoming year. Sayegh’s guilty plea came after she filed a lawsuit against her former department and township, alleging sexual harassment and gender discrimination.
