A gathering in central London known as the Unite The Kingdom rally is sparking concerns among various communities despite being promoted as a platform for free speech. Organized by Tommy Robinson, the event has drawn together a diverse group of far-right activists disseminating hateful messages and unfounded conspiracy theories. Among them is a woman labeled a “shieldmaiden of the far-right” who alleges a plot by “western elites” to replace white Christians with immigrants.
The lineup of speakers includes individuals with controversial backgrounds, such as a German politician under investigation for alleged Kremlin bribe involvement, a Danish MEP who made a Nazi salute in jest, and a Belgian politician associated with Hitler’s SS paramilitary. Police have raised alarms regarding the safety of Muslims in the city due to the international far-right figures set to attend the rally.
Expected to draw tens of thousands of participants, the march is scheduled to commence near Waterloo Bridge before speeches, including those by Robinson, are delivered on Whitehall. One of the speakers, Eva Vlaardingerbroek, faced criticism for a video removed by YouTube for violating hate speech policies, where she promoted the debunked theory of the “Great Replacement.”
The event will feature other speakers like far-right German MEP Petr Bystron, Danish MEP Morten Messerschmidt, and Belgian politician Philip Dewinter, known for his controversial statements and affiliations. Notable figures such as Polish MEP Dominik Tarczyski, pastor Brian Tamaki, and Rebel News founder Ezra Levant are also on the roster.
Robinson has called on his supporters to refrain from wearing masks and excessive drinking during the event. However, concerns persist over potential clashes with a counter March Against Fascism and concurrent football matches. Stringent security measures, including a designated “sterile area” and police presence, are in place to prevent disorder between opposing groups.
With over 1,600 police officers deployed, including reinforcements from other forces, the authorities are vigilant against any anti-Muslim rhetoric or offensive behavior. Commander Clair Haynes emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of all individuals in London, particularly those from Muslim communities, and encouraged anyone feeling uneasy to seek assistance from law enforcement during the event.
