A murder charge has been filed against a man in connection with the tragic death of his two-year-old daughter. The child passed away after being left unattended in a hot car for nearly three-and-a-half hours. Christopher Scholtes, 37, allegedly left his youngest daughter, Parker, in a car parked in his driveway on a scorching day, where temperatures could have soared up to 81 degrees Celsius inside the vehicle.
Prosecutors claim that Scholtes was engrossed in playing video games and consuming alcohol while his daughter, secured in her car seat, succumbed to the heat on July 9, 2024. Additionally, allegations suggest that he accessed explicit content during this time. However, a judge has ruled against including this information in the upcoming trial.
Although the prosecution can bring up past incidents where Scholtes’ children were left unsupervised in a car, references to specific online activities on the day of the incident have been restricted by the court. Scholtes initially stated that he left Parker sleeping in the car with the air conditioning running for only 30 minutes, but evidence revealed that he was occupied with video games for over three hours until his wife found the unconscious child upon returning home.
Tragically, Parker was pronounced dead at a medical center where her mother worked. Investigations have also uncovered accounts from Scholtes’ other daughters, aged six and nine, detailing previous instances of being left alone in a car. Despite facing first-degree murder charges, Scholtes’s wife remains supportive, referring to the incident as a significant error during legal proceedings. Rejecting a plea deal earlier, Scholtes now faces the possibility of a life sentence if convicted at trial.
